The organization was founded in the winter of 1958 by Mary Van Stolk of Edmonton to protest the dangers of nuclear fallout. Mrs. Stolk travelled across Canada, meeting clergymen, businessmen, academics, politicians, and others, gathering a consensus to form a national committee. Hugh L.
